<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Join us for the third edition of the International Summer School, organized together with the ADIA Lab and the University of Granada. This program is designed for top master’s, PhD students, and young professionals, and will explore the forefront of responsible AI in the generative and agentic AI era. The summer school will be held in combination with the<a href="https://www.ieeesmc.org/cai-2026/"> IEEE Conference in Granada</a> (May 8–10), offering participants a unique opportunity to engage with cutting-edge research, international experts, and hands-on learning experiences.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Program Overview</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The 2026 course program is organized around&nbsp;<strong>four clusters</strong>, each exploring a key aspect of generative and agentic AI. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Location</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The summer school will take place in the charming city of Granada, known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant culture. The school will be held on the campus of the Andalusian Research Institute in Data Science and Computational Intelligence (DaSCI), part of the University of Granada, located in the south of the city, approximately 15 minutes from the city center by public transportation.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The modern campus offers excellent facilities for lectures and group work, with breakout rooms designed for collaboration. Coffee breaks and lunches will be held in the spacious lobby, and there are also several local restaurants nearby. The campus is easily accessible by public transportation or car.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For convenience, students have the option to book accommodation just a few steps away from the lecture hall, ensuring a comfortable and seamless experience.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Beyond the academic program, participants will have the opportunity to explore Granada’s historic landmarks, including the Alhambra Palace and Generalife Gardens, which provide a unique and inspiring backdrop for the summer school.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Accommodation Details</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For the duration of the summer school, students have the option to book a room in a modern student residence, conveniently located just a few minutes&#8217; walk from the UGR campus and 15 minutes from the city center by public transportation. The residence offers high-end facilities, including a gym, pool, rooftop terrace, and lounge. Each student will have a private studio with their own bathroom and a small kitchen. The cost is <strong>€67 per day, including breakfast</strong>. If you need it, the school can manage your reservation at the same time as we handle your registration.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The University of Granada aims to offer practical and applied learning accessible to all interested in Machine Learning and Big Data for Bioinformatics. For this purpose, it has a group of university professors, researchers, professionals, and specialists in each area, who will help introduce Bioinformatics and Machine Learning in their broadest aspects, combining academic rigor with a simple and direct methodology for understanding and enjoyment.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This online course (MOOC) has a duration of 100 hours (8 weeks + 1 additional week to finish any pending content) and is delivered in asynchronous mode (no need to attend classes at a set time) and offers 4 ECTS credits for students from any UGR degree program.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Every Monday, all available material for the module to be covered that week will be added to the abiertaUGR platform. The temporal planning is designed to work on one module each week, but each student can make the temporal planning that best suits their needs, considering that the course lasts for 8 weeks plus 1 additional week provided by abiertaUGR for students to complete any pending work.</p>

Her career includes prestigious postdoctoral contracts such as Juan de la Cierva and Ramón y Cajal, as well as an outstanding scientific output in internationally renowned conferences and journals.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The researcher expressed her deep emotion and gratitude for this recognition, which she considers “a very great reward” for the effort and perseverance that have marked her career. She emphasized that this distinction helps give visibility to research and strengthens the role of science in society.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Rodríguez also expressed her hope that the medal will serve as an inspiration for younger generations, encouraging “boys and girls to study science” and to consider research as a future career path.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The official award ceremony will take place on February 28, Andalusia Day, at the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, in an institutional event that honors individuals and organizations for their contribution to the progress of the autonomous community.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the 2026 edition, the European final will take place from June 16th to 19th at the University of Granada (UGR), during the Coimbra Group of Universities&#8217; Annual Conference and Assembly.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Conference Hall of the Triunfo Administrative Complex hosted the UGR semifinal of the Three Minute Thesis (3MT), a university competition in which young researchers present their doctoral thesis in a maximum of three minutes, delivering their talk in English and using only a single slide. The event was chaired by the UGR Vice-Rector for Postgraduate Studies and Lifelong Learning, Ana María García Campaña, while Professor Dorothy Kelly, from the Department of Translation and Interpreting, served as chair of the jury.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Following the semifinal, eight doctoral students from the University of Granada have qualified for the final UGR round, which will determine who will represent the University of Granada in the international final of the competition.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The competition is organised by the Vice-Rectorate for Postgraduate Studies and Lifelong Learning and the International School for Postgraduate Studies at the University of Granada. The contest is international in scope and has reached its tenth edition this year. It is promoted by the Coimbra Group university alliance. 3MT is based on an idea developed by the University of Queensland, Australia, which has since spread to many other universities around the world. Its aim is to develop the communication and science‑outreach skills of early‑career researchers.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To help students prepare their talk, the International School for Postgraduate Studies and the UGR Communication Management Office organised a one‑month communication workshop, where participants learned key strategies for effectively disseminating their work. An English enhancement course was also offered in collaboration with staff from the UGR’s Modern Languages Centre (CLM).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A jury made up of professionals linked to the fields of communication and scientific outreach will select the winner of the UGR final, who will then be submitted to the Coimbra Group jury and compete representing the University of Granada alongside the finalists from the rest of the European universities.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The combination of data from six European hospitals and machine‑learning techniques enables the University of Granada to improve the identification of one of the most difficult‑to‑classify nontuberculous bacteria</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A team of researchers from the Department of Computer Science at the University of Granada and the DaSCI – Andalusian Research Institute in Data Science and Computational Intelligence, in collaboration with Clover Bioanalytical Software S.L. and the Gregorio Marañón General University Hospital, has developed a machine‑learning approach that significantly improves the identification of subspecies within the <em>Mycobacterium abscessus</em> complex using MALDI‑TOF MS spectra, a rapid and accurate technique for identifying microorganisms through protein patterns.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The study, recently published in <em><a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.jproteome.5c00534">Journal of Proteome Research</a></em>, analyzes 325 spectral profiles obtained in a multicenter setting and shows that correcting inter‑laboratory variability, reducing spectral binning, and combining this processing with feature selection and class‑balancing techniques yields performance far superior to what has been reported to date. The best configuration achieved approximately 97% precision and recall in species and variant identification, and around 97% correct classification among subspecies in the test set.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the key technical elements of the work is the reduction of binning, a concept referring to the grouping of signals in the spectrum. This decision enhances the model’s ability to detect subtle differences between highly similar spectra and contributes to balanced results across subspecies, including notable improvements in identifying the most challenging variant to discriminate: <em>M. abscessus</em> subsp. <em>bolletii</em>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The proposed method aims to increase model robustness in real‑world scenarios, where data come from different hospitals and exhibit inherent variability. Such robustness is essential for AI‑based tools to be reliably transferred into clinical practice. The work forms part of the doctoral thesis of Erica Fuillerat, a PhD student at DaSCI, and also includes the participation of Juan Emilio Martínez, second co‑author and doctoral student at the same institute. Additionally, <a href="https://zenodo.org/records/17937866">the data used in the study are available on Zenodo</a>, in line with open‑science and reproducibility principles.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The University of Granada, together with the international company Revvity, will award the best master’s theses (TFM) at the national level in bioinformatics and computational biology as part of the seventh edition of the Bioinformatics Datathon. This event will take place within the framework of the <strong>10th Bioinformatics Conference of the UGR</strong>, held on <strong>February 17 and 18, 2026</strong>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Students from any Spanish university may participate, provided they have defended a thesis related to the field between January 1, 2025 and January 10, 2026, and that it has not been submitted in previous editions of the Datathon. The prizes, sponsored by Revvity, will be <strong>€1,800 for first place</strong> and <strong>€1,200 for second place</strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The competition is organized by the Departments of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence (DECSAI) and Statistics and Operations Research, together with the Bioinformatics Unit of the Centre for Genomics and Oncological Research (GENYO). The aim of the Datathon is to recognize excellence in work related to data science applied to computational biology and bioinformatics, selecting the two best master’s theses presented at Spanish universities.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Revvity, a company based in the Granada Health Technology Park, has established itself as a reference in bioinformatics, integrating biology, computing, and complex data analysis to generate useful knowledge and promote scientific innovation.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With this Datathon, both UGR and Revvity aim to foster emerging talent in bioinformatics, a key discipline for biomedicine and the life sciences. They also seek to encourage students to strengthen their skills in synthesis, communication, and scientific dissemination, contributing to the development of a strong scientific, technological, and innovative culture in Spain.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Every <a href="https://11defebrero.org/">February 11th, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science</a> is celebrated—a date proclaimed by the United Nations to recognize the work of women scientists, highlight their contributions, and advocate for equal opportunities in accessing and developing scientific and technological careers.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This day reminds us that talent knows no gender, but opportunities historically have. Although significant progress has been made, women continue to be underrepresented in many STEAM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), especially in disciplines such as artificial intelligence, computer engineering, or physics. The gap persists, and with it the need to continue generating real and relatable role models: women who research, lead projects, innovate, and transform our environment.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At the DaSCI center, we believe that visibility is a powerful tool. When a girl sees a woman doing science, she understands that this path can also be hers. That is why every year we join this celebration with initiatives that bring research closer to younger generations and put a face to the science carried out by women.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This year, we are organizing a new edition of <em>“Coffee with Science”</em>, an activity funded by the Descubre Foundation that seeks to break down barriers between the scientific world and students. The format is simple yet powerful: a female researcher sits at a table with a small group of students and, while sharing a coffee, they talk about science, technology, artificial intelligence, research life, or the role of women in science. It is a relaxed space that invites questions, debate, and discovery.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We will welcome 55 students from IES Manuel de Falla (Maracena), who will have the opportunity to talk with six researchers from our center:</p>

It will be a unique opportunity for students to learn first-hand what it is like to work in research, what professional paths exist, and why diversity is essential for building a more complete and fairer scientific community.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From DaSCI, we celebrate February 11th with a firm commitment to continue fostering scientific vocations among girls and young women, to promote spaces for dialogue and exchange, and to recognize the fundamental role that women play in advancing knowledge. Because for science to be truly universal, it must include every voice. We would like to express our special thanks to the teaching staff of IES Manuel de Falla (Maracena) for taking part in this activity with such dedication.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The University of Granada is hosting the GPAIS Winter School this week, a winter school focused on General‑Purpose AI Systems (GPAIS), organized by the Andalusian Inter‑University Institute in Data Science and Computational Intelligence (DaSCI) and the University of Granada. The event brings together researchers, professionals, and students from around the world interested in the development of general‑purpose AI models capable of performing a wide variety of tasks and adapting to different contexts—from natural language generation to solving complex problems across multiple domains.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Over five days, the scientific program offers a comprehensive exploration of the current AI revolution. The sessions delve into Foundation Models (for language, vision, and tabular data), Zero‑Shot Learning, and the reuse of pretrained models—essential techniques enabling AI systems to perform complex tasks without requiring task‑specific data.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The school also dedicates a core block to the theoretical architecture of these systems, analyzing why Transformers—the engine behind modern language models—work, and exploring advanced mathematical and optimization methods applied to deep learning.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The excellence of this training event is backed by a world‑class faculty panel, positioning Granada at the forefront of AI research. Topics include multimodal models (Anurag Arnab, Google DeepMind) and automated machine learning (AutoML) (Frank Hutter, University of Freiburg), a pioneer in foundation models for tabular data. The academic program is further enriched by researchers from prestigious institutions such as the University of Oxford (José Antonio Carrillo), INRIA in France (Julien Mairal), and leading Asian universities such as Nanjing University (Zhi‑Hua Zhou) and the University of Hong Kong (Rui Zhang and Xingyu Wu), who provide a global perspective on stability, optimization, and future challenges of these systems.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The event combines in‑person sessions in Granada with an open online format, enabling participation from a global community. All talks are being streamed openly on YouTube, making them accessible to anyone interested in the challenges of responsible AI.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The GPAIS Winter School thus consolidates itself as a reference space for knowledge exchange and advanced training in a field that is shaping the future of research, industry, and public policy. Through this initiative, the University of Granada and the DaSCI Institute reinforce their commitment to developing ethical, transparent, and socially beneficial artificial intelligence.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This winter school is part of the project <em>“Ethical, Responsible, and General‑Purpose Artificial Intelligence: Applications in High‑Risk Scenarios (IAFER) Exp.: TSI‑100927‑2023‑1”</em>, funded through the creation of university‑industry chairs (ENIA Chairs) aimed at research and development in artificial intelligence, as well as its dissemination and training, within the framework of the European Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, financed by the European Union–NextGenerationEU through the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Administration, in collaboration with the multinational company REPSOL.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A team of researchers from the Andalusian Interuniversity Institute of Data Science and Computational Intelligence (DaSCI) at the University of Granada, the University of Oviedo, the University of A Coruña, and the technology cooperative Panacea Cooperative Research has presented an artificial intelligence system that marks a turning point in estimating legal age from dental X-rays. The work, <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1568494625016990">titled &#8220;Trustworthy AI-based legal age estimation using orthopantomographs&#8221; and published in the journal Applied Soft Computing,</a> offers a precise, robust, and ethically designed tool to help determine whether a person is over or under 18 years of age, a critical process in the protection of undocumented migrant children.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The new method, called LAENet, was trained using the largest and most diverse collection of orthopantomograms to date. The dataset includes more than 10,700 X-rays from 16 countries and five continents, allowing the system to function reliably even when faced with individuals from very different geographical backgrounds. Furthermore, the researchers conducted external validation using nearly a thousand additional images from countries not included in the training, thus simulating real-world scenarios where a person&#8217;s origin is unknown or highly heterogeneous.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The results show performance comparable to that of forensic specialists, with an average error of just 1.12 years. However, the system&#8217;s most significant contribution lies not only in its accuracy but also in its ethical approach. LAENet incorporates uncertainty estimation techniques that allow for the calculation of prediction intervals and, consequently, a statistically supported minimum estimated age. This mechanism drastically reduces the risk of misclassifying a minor as an adult, an error with serious legal and social consequences. Furthermore, the model provides activation maps that show which regions of the X-ray were relevant to the decision, reinforcing transparency and human oversight.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The study underscores that legal age estimation is a complex process that traditionally relies on manual methods, which are slow and subject to inter-observer variability. The proposal developed by DaSCI and Panacea offers an objective, reproducible, and validated alternative across diverse populations, aligned with European principles of Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence, particularly regarding technical robustness, non-discrimination, and social welfare.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As part of their commitment to knowledge transfer, the team has made a free application available to healthcare and forensic professionals, allowing them to easily use the system. Through this application, users can upload an orthopantomogram and obtain age estimates, prediction intervals, and<a href="https://panacea-coop.com/aplicacion-para-la-estimacion-de-edad-usando-ortopantomografias/?lang=es"> visualization of the model&#8217;s areas of interest. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">This advance represents a decisive step towards the real application of artificial intelligence in contexts of high social sensitivity, where scientific precision and the protection of human rights must always go hand in hand.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Artificial intelligence is evolving at a remarkable pace, and with it come new challenges that demand thoughtful analysis and innovative proposals. With this goal in mind, <strong>“Generative &amp; Agentic AI: The Next Challenges”</strong> is conceived as an <strong>Ideas Laboratory (ThinkTank)</strong>—a dedicated forum for exchanging knowledge and generating solutions around the pressing issues of generative and agentic AI, especially in relation to cybersecurity.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This event is part of the <strong>Strategic Project IAFER-Cib (C074/23)</strong>, arising from the collaboration agreement between the <strong>National Cybersecurity Institute (INCIBE)</strong> and the <strong>University of Granada</strong>, within the framework of Spain’s <strong>Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan</strong>, funded by the <strong>European Union (NextGenerationEU)</strong>.<br><strong>#ProyectosCiber #PlanDeRecuperación #NextGenerationEU</strong></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What is this ThinkTank?</strong></h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is an independent, multidisciplinary forum that brings together experts from <strong>technology, policy, economics, jurisprudence, and data science</strong> to <strong>analyze current challenges, generate knowledge, and propose evidence-based solutions</strong>. The target audience includes <strong>academics, researchers, companies, and technology centers</strong> seeking to understand and anticipate the impact of AI on society and cybersecurity.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Over two days, the ThinkTank will host <strong>talks, debates, and roundtables</strong> featuring leading international specialists, addressing key topics such as <strong>model explainability</strong>, <strong>agentic AI</strong>, <strong>responsibility and safety in educational contexts</strong>, and the <strong>development of open, trustworthy systems</strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This ThinkTank goes beyond reflection: it aims to <strong>produce reports, studies, and academic articles</strong>, as well as <strong>practical recommendations for policymakers, industry, and international organizations</strong>. The forum maintains an <strong>independent, objective stance</strong>, grounded in <strong>solid data and evidence</strong>, and <strong>promotes collaboration</strong> with national and international institutions to exchange knowledge, share resources, and broaden its impact on public policy and scientific debate.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The initiative seeks to generate <strong>synergies that outlast the event itself</strong>, fostering <strong>knowledge transfer from academia to industry and technology</strong>, and contributing to the development of AI that is <strong>safer, more ethical, and more trustworthy</strong>.</p>
