Isaac Triguero Velázquez (Granada, 1986) is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Granada. Since May 2026, he has served as Director of the Andalusian Interuniversity Research Institute in Data Science and Computational Intelligence (DaSCI).
He received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Granada in 2014, researching the design of evolutionary algorithms for data preprocessing. After a postdoctoral fellowship at Ghent University (Belgium), he joined the University of Nottingham (UK) in 2016 as an Assistant Professor of Data Science, where he was promoted to Associate Professor in 2020. In 2022, he returned to Granada as a María Zambrano Senior Research Fellow. He is currently accredited by the Spanish Research Agency (ANECA) as a Full Professor of Computer Science.
His research focuses on the development of large-scale data analytics and optimisation methodologies, with particular attention to General-Purpose Artificial Intelligence (GPAIS), self-supervised learning, anomaly detection, explainable AI, and federated learning. His most prominent contributions include state-of-the-art techniques in Big Data preprocessing and real-world applications in the fields of energy and health, including a publication in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine (IF>30).
His H-index is 39, with over 7,000 citations (Google Scholar), 60 journal articles (the vast majority in Q1 journals), and over 40 conference papers. He is listed among the Top 2% most cited researchers worldwide according to the Stanford ranking.
In terms of funding, he has secured over half a million pounds as principal investigator during his time at Nottingham, including knowledge transfer contracts with E.ON and Unilever. He currently co-leads three projects on GPAIS: the IAFER project (€1.6M, ENIA Programme), the A3GPAIS project (€122K, Spanish Ministry of Science), and the European KnoWare project (€270K, Horizon Europe). He is also Co-PI of the Andalusian Digital Innovation Hub in AI and Robotics (AIRA, Horizon Europe).
He has supervised 8 PhD students to completion and currently supervises 7 doctoral students. He served as Program Co-Chair for three conferences on Big Data, including the 2018 IEEE International Congress on Big Data. He is Section Editor-in-Chief of the journal Machine Learning and Knowledge Extraction and an associate editor of Neurocomputing and IEEE Access. He has acted as an external evaluator for the ERC, Ikerbasque, and the Swiss government.
He is the author of three textbooks: “Conceptual Programming with Python” (2019), “Large Scale Data Analytics with Python and Spark” (Cambridge University Press, 2023), and “Análisis de datos a gran escala con Python y Spark” (Anaya, 2025). He has contributed multiple times to the YouTube channel Computerphile (over 2.3 million subscribers).
