Director’s Welcome
Welcome to the Andalusian Interuniversity Research Institute in Data Science and Computational Intelligence (DaSCI Institute).
DaSCI was founded in 2017 by Highly Cited Researcher Francisco (Paco) Herrera as a joint initiative of the universities of Granada, Jaén, and Córdoba to advance research in Artificial Intelligence (AI), with a focus on Data Science and Computational Intelligence. Since May 2026, the institute has entered a new phase under new leadership, with a firm commitment to consolidating and expanding DaSCI’s national and international impact.
AI is no longer a promise — it has become one of the most transformative technologies in our society. Its impact is cross-cutting and growing, and DaSCI has both the responsibility and the ambition to be at the forefront of this transformation.
Our research is structured around four pillars: Data Science (integration, statistical learning, Big Data), Computational Intelligence (evolutionary computation, fuzzy systems, deep learning), Trustworthy AI and General-Purpose AI Systems (GPAIS), and Applications in areas such as health AI, energy and industry, and cybersecurity.
The figures speak for themselves: over 100 researchers and 150 PhD students; more than 600 publications and 15,000 citations in the 2022–2025 period, with a Field-Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI) of 2.54 and 85% of articles in Q1 journals; over 60 competitive projects and €17 million in funding. We also have our own headquarters at the UGR-AI Building on the Health Sciences Campus in Granada and over 25,000 TFLOPS of GPU computing capacity.
Our goal is to establish DaSCI as a benchmark institute of excellence at the European level, leading rigorous, responsible AI research with real impact on society. I invite you to learn more about our institute, explore our research lines, and collaborate with us towards that goal.
