Cristóbal Romero es Doctor en Informática por la Universidad de Granada en el año 2003 y Catedrático de Universidad del área de Ciencias de la Computación e Inteligencia Artificial en la Universidad de Córdoba desde marzo de 2018. Es miembro del grupo de investigación KDIS desde su fundación en el año 2009. Sus principales líneas de investigación son la aplicación de técnicas de minería de datos/analítica del aprendizaje (EDM/LA) y técnicas de inteligencia artificial a entornos educativos. Ha publicado más de 50 artículos en revistas científicas con índice de impacto JCR Thomson Reuters, y más de 150 artículos en revistas y comunicaciones en congresos de investigación internacionales. Ha sido uno de los miembros fundadores de la Sociedad Internacional de EDM y editor asociado de la revista IEEE Transaction on Learning Technologies journal from 2015 until 2020. Fue pre-seleccionado como ISI Highly Cited Research (Investigador Altamente Citado) por Thomson Reuters en las listas preliminares de Enero de 2013 en el área de Computer Science. Tiene un índice Crown normalizado de 5,80 (en el rango de los años 2015-2018) siendo un valor muy por encima de la media mundial de 1. Es el actual ganador del Premio 2020 WINNER of The Prof. Ram Kumar Educational Data Mining Test of Time Award que otorga anulamente la sociedad EDM.

En 2020 ha sido incluido en el listado de investigadores «World Scientist: World´s Top 2% Scientists” publicado en la prestigiosa revista Plos Biology en la que se recoge la elite mundial en el mundo de la investigación científica.
