He was born in Jódar (Jaén) in 1969. He has been a Full Professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence since 2007 and has taught at the Faculty of Communication and Documentation and at the School of Computer and Telecommunications Engineering at the University of Granada since 1994.
He has served as Vice Dean of Research at the Faculty of Communication and Documentation, is a member of the research group Soft Computing and Intelligent Systems, director of the multidisciplinary research group SECABA Lab, and was recently elected as a member of the governing board of the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society. He is currently the Vice-Rector for Research and Knowledge Transfer at the University of Granada.
He received the Extraordinary Doctoral Dissertation Award in 1996, the University of Granada Award for Excellence in Research on two occasions, and the Social Council Award for Young Researchers in 2005. His research focuses on areas such as computational intelligence, digital libraries, web quality evaluation, Web 2.0, information retrieval on the Internet, recommender systems, fuzzy logic, computing with words, group and multi-criteria decision-making, bibliometrics, and social network data analysis. In these fields, he has published more than 130 papers in ISI-indexed international journals, led more than 20 research projects, and supervised 15 doctoral dissertations.
He is an Associate Editor for numerous ISI international journals such as Information Sciences, Knowledge-Based Systems, Applied Soft Computing, Soft Computing, Fuzzy Optimization and Decision Making, Technological and Economic Development of Economy, Journal of Intelligent & Fuzzy Systems, and IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics: Systems. He is also a reviewer for several other ISI journals, including Fuzzy Sets and Systems and the International Journal of Information Technology and Decision Making.
According to Thomson Reuters’ Web of Science, his scientific output has received more than 8,000 citations, with an h-index of 47. According to Google Scholar, the figures rise to 27,756 citations with an h-index of 81. In any case, he is the second most cited Spanish researcher in the field of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. In 2013, he published an analysis in the prestigious journal Science on the new role of libraries in the Information Society; and in 2014, he was identified by Thomson Reuters as one of the Highly Cited and most influential scientists in his field, currently having more than 20 highly cited papers according to Thomson Reuters.
