Profesor Catedrático de Universidad (Professor) of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, Francisco Herrera Triguero, born in Jódar (Jaén), is a professor and director of the research group “Soft Computing and Intelligent Information Systems” at the University of Granada. He is director of the Andalusian Interuniversity Institute in Data Science and Computational Intelligence (DaSCI) at the University of Granada and the University of Jaén.
Herrera Triguero studied at the Virgen de Fátima School and the Juan López Morillas Secondary School in Jódar.
He later studied mathematics in Granada and went on to complete a PhD in Artificial Intelligence (1991) in the Department of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, where he became a professor in 2005 and has continued his professional work ever since. He is currently considered one of the most influential Spanish scientists in the world in the field of computer science and engineering.
In 2010, he was awarded the National Computer Science Prize, in the Aritmel category, by the Spanish Computer Science Society for his scientific contributions in the areas of Soft Computing and Data Mining, which have had a major impact on the scientific community, and for promoting research activities in this area in Spain.
The University of Jaén honoured him in 2015 with the title of “Natural de Jaén”. The city where he was born honoured him in 2017 with the title “Hijo Predilecto y Escudo de Oro” (Favourite Son and Golden Shield) of the City of Jódar. That same year, he received the Medal of Andalusia. In 2018, the City of Granada honoured him with the “Granada, City of Science and Innovation” award for his scientific career.
