Episode 49: European Researchers’ Night. What Can’t AI Do?

#podcast #T6E1 26 septiembre, 2025

Welcome to a new episode—the first of Season Six—of the radio show SintonIA, a collaboration between the University of Granada, Radio Lab, and the Andalusian Interuniversity Institute in Data Science and Computational Intelligence (DaSCI).

On this occasion, hosts Rocío Romero and Francisco Jesús Martínez lead a live debate from the DaSCI Institute’s stand at the European Researchers’ Night in Granada, held at the Paseo del Salón, on what Artificial Intelligence (AI) cannot do.

The debate featured four researchers from the University of Granada: two psychologists (María Cobos and Cristina Arganes) and two computer scientists (Carlos Pérez and Iván Sevillano).

The experts agreed that AI should not—and cannot—replace genuine human experience or interpersonal relationships, as it lacks empathy, purpose, agency, a living body, or the ability to experience anxiety. Legal restrictions that prevent AI from intervening in sensitive matters were also highlighted, in a friendly and enriching discussion about the limits of AI.

This program and the celebration of the European Researchers’ Night are part of the project “Ethical, Responsible, and General-Purpose Artificial Intelligence: Applications in Risk Scenarios (IAFER)” (Ref.: TSI-100927-2023-1), funded through the creation of university-business chairs (Cátedras Enia), aimed at the research, development, dissemination, and training in artificial intelligence within the framework of the European Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, funded by the European Union – Next Generation EU.
