Alberto Fernández nació en Cádiz en 1982. Obtuvo el título de Ingeniero y Doctor en Informática por la Universidad de Granada, Granada, España, en 2005 y 2010, respectivamente. Es Profesor Titular de Universidad en el Departamento de Ciencias de la Computación e Inteligencia Artificial desde 2017, e imparte clases en la Facultad de Ciencias y en la E.T.S. de Ingenierías Informática y de Telecomunicación de la Universidad de Granada, España.

Ha recibido el Premio Extraordinario de Tesis Doctoral 2010, en tres ocasiones el Premio a Trabajos de Excelencia de la Universidad de Granada, así como el premio Lofti Zadeh a la mejor publicación en 2009. Sus investigaciones se centran en temas como la clasificación en dominios no balanceados, aprendizaje de reglas difusas, algoritmos evolutivos, problemas de multi-clasificación con Ensembles y técnicas de descomposición y Ciencia de Datos y aplicaciones en Big Data, en los que ha publicado más de 50 trabajos en revistas internacionales ISI, colaborado en más de 20 proyectos y contratos de investigación y 3 tesis doctorales.

Es miembro del comité editorial en un buen número de revistas internacionales como Applied Intelligence, PLOS-One, Progress in Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Computation and Big Data, y miembro del comité de “referees” de otras tantas revistas ISI como Fuzzy Sets and Systems, IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems, Information Sciences, entre otras.

Según Web of Science de Thomson Reuters su producción científica ha recibido más de 4000 citas, presentando un índice H de 27. En 2017 fue identificado por Clarivate Analytics como uno de los Científicos Altamente Citados y más influyentes en su campo.
