- The International Summer School in Explainable AI organised by the University of Granada and ADIA Lab concludes with great success and announces its winners.
- Funded by INCIBE, the Summer School exceeds students’ expectations and awards prizes to three outstanding projects in explainability of artificial intelligence.
The International Summer School organised by ADIA Lab and the University of Granada with the theme Explainable AI and funded by the National Institute of Cybersecurity (INCIBE), has concluded with great success after an intense week of training and collaboration on one of the most relevant topics in AI today: explainability. This summer school is part of the Strategic Project “Ethical, responsible and general purpose artificial intelligence for cybersecurity” IAFER-Cib (C074/23), as a result of the collaboration agreement signed between the National Institute of Cybersecurity (INCIBE) and the University of Granada. This initiative is carried out within the framework of the funds of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, financed by the European Union-Next Generation EU.
The satisfaction of the students has been remarkable, highlighting not only the high quality of the academic content, which exceeded their expectations, but also the ambitious social programme that included a day of tapas in the city, a visit to the Alhambra, a flamenco show and a closing gala dinner. This environment provided an unforgettable educational and cultural experience.
During the school, students were organised into eight multidisciplinary teams, tackling different challenges related to the explainability of AI in medicine, finance, governance, LLM, time series anomalies, among others. The teams applied the knowledge acquired during the sessions to develop innovative solutions in highly topical areas.
The jury highlighted the excellent overall level of all the groups, but decided to award three prizes to the most outstanding projects, two of them ex aequo first prize given the high quality of the work:
- Second Prize: awarded to Team 7, formed by Hamdan Al Ahbabi (Khalifa University), Hamad Al Ahbabi (Khalifa University), David de la Rosa (DaSIC-UJA), Oroel Ipas (DaSCI-UGR), Hamza Munir (U. Copenhagen) and Umaima Rahman (Mohamed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence), for their work on explainability applied to models in the face of out-of-distribution data, a key challenge for the robustness and security of AI systems.
- First Prize (ex aequo): to Team 5, composed of Amna Alhammadi (Khalifa University), Saeed Aljaberi (Khalifa University), Meera Amansoori (ADIA), Aysha Alteneiji (Khalifa University), Mario García (DaSCI-UGR) and Nicolás Segura (DaSCI-UGR), which addressed explainability in large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, with the aim of promoting confidence in their answers.
- First Prize (ex aequo): to Team 8, composed of Saeed Alqubaisi (New York University Abu Dhabi), Vahan Babushkin (ADIA), Manuel Germán (DaSCI-UJA), Yaima González (Harvard), Rahmila Nadi (Harvard) and Xabier Zubizarreta (U. Zaragoza), for their proposal on explainability in time series anomaly detection, a key tool for understanding unexpected phenomena in critical systems.
The international character (Harvard, New York University Abu Dhabi, Khalifa University, Copenhagen, Zaragoza, Eindhoven University of Technology, Tilburg University, Deusto among others) of both the winners and the students in general is a reflection of the diverse, interdisciplinary and global character of this summer school.
The International Summer School on Explainable AI is thus consolidating itself as a reference meeting point for young researchers and professionals of the future, promoting a more transparent, fair and reliable AI.
INCIBE’s particular mission is to boost the cybersecurity capabilities of society and the economy in general through a programme that seeks to promote and generate knowledge and its transfer to the productive sector, especially by establishing synergies between the social and economic spheres of cybersecurity. To develop this purpose, the programme of grants for the excellence of advanced research teams in cybersecurity was launched in 2018. In 2022, specifically on 5 December, in order to give continuity to this strategy, the public invitation for collaboration in the promotion of Strategic Cybersecurity Projects in Spain was published.
These initiatives are included in the Global Security Innovation Programme, included in the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR) through Component 15. Investment 7 Cybersecurity: Strengthening the capacities of citizens, SMEs and professionals and boosting the sector.
Strategic projects are a way of providing concrete solutions to some of the biggest scientific and technological challenges facing our society and economy. They are aimed at promoting the application of the results of research and innovation, combining new forms of governance and collaboration, as well as involving citizens and the productive and social fabric.
