Last week, Dr Francisco Herrera and Dr Enrique Herrera, renowned international leaders in the field of Artificial Intelligence, made an important academic visit to Peru, invited by the San Ignacio de Loyola University (USIL). This initiative was organised by USIL’s Vice-Rectorate for Internationalisation, led by Juan Carlos Mathews Salazar, with the aim of strengthening collaborative links between institutions and promoting in-depth reflection on the ethical and contextualised development of AI in Latin America.
During their stay in Lima, Dr. Herrera and Dr. Herrera participated in an intense schedule of conferences, meetings with researchers, and working groups where they addressed the challenges and opportunities presented by artificial intelligence in the region. As reported in the official USIL news release, the event was a unique opportunity to inspire Peruvian students and professionals and to consolidate strategies for academic and scientific cooperation.
In particular, the session entitled ‘Latin America must build Artificial Intelligence with its own identity’ —featured in the USIL news blog— opened a space for reflection on the need to develop technologies that respond to the social, economic and cultural realities of the continent. Francisco and Enrique Herrera emphasised the importance of training local talent, promoting critical thinking and establishing solid ethical frameworks to accompany the adoption of these technologies.
This visit is part of the research group’s firm commitment to promoting inclusive, responsible AI with social impact, as well as strengthening international collaboration networks in the scientific and academic fields. The warm welcome from the Peruvian academic community, as well as the interest shown in the topics addressed, reinforce the need to continue promoting spaces for interdisciplinary meeting and dialogue on the future of Artificial Intelligence in Ibero-America.

An academic bridge between Peru and Spain
During the event, USIL signed an agreement with the University of Granada to identify and train Peruvian talent in artificial intelligence.
The initiative seeks to create a national doctoral corpus, establish the UGR-USIL Chair in Artificial Intelligence and Innovation, and promote good practices in the ethical and responsible use of this technology in businesses, society and the State.
‘We are building an unprecedented bridge with the use of AI to bring education to the most remote parts of the country,’ said Raúl Diez Canseco Terry, founder and president of USIL.
‘Technological challenges are also opportunities to foster creativity, human talent and equitable development,’ he concluded.
