Granada, Wednesday 13 May 2025. With more than a thousand events in 75 locations, the international science outreach festival Pint of Science will fill bars across the country with science on 19, 20 and 21 May. Through informative talks, monologues or experiments lasting between 20 and 30 minutes, researchers from all areas of knowledge will take science out of the laboratories and share their knowledge with the public in bars.
In Granada, Pint of Science will be held at Lemon Rock, Café Pub Liberia and Cotton Club, with a total of 18 scientific talks covering the following topics: Our society, From atoms to galaxies, Tech me out, Planet Earth, Our body and Wonderful mind. Among the researchers and scientists participating in this edition of Pint of Science Granada are Sara Armada, who will make a plea against good musical taste; Juan José Herrera, who will warn us about our friendship with ChatGPT; and Gerardo García, who will take us to the galactic hairdresser’s to cut -only the tips- of black holes. One of the main objectives of the organisation is to encourage direct dialogue between the research community and society, incorporating this year the promotion of scientific vocations among children. Antonio Gómez, bioinformatician at ibs.GRANADA and coordinator of the festival in Granada, explains that “in this edition, in addition to our usual offer of scientific talks in bars, we are incorporating Pint Kids, an activity designed for children. With prior registration on our website, they will be able to enjoy fun and educational experiments on genomics and artificial intelligence by researchers from Granada”.
In addition, Granada joins other initiatives proposed by the national coordination, such as Pinta a Bulo, an initiative in collaboration with Infoveritas, which will provide training for speakers and tools for attendees to combat scientific misinformation in their talks; and Pintíficas, an exhibition to publicise the research of some twenty Spanish women scientists, which will be on display in Granada at the Parque de las Ciencias de Andalucía-Granada in June.
Carlos Peris Torres, national coordinator of Pint of Science and also a researcher, comments that “each edition is an adventure; each of the 1000 talks this year across the country will be an opportunity to inspire and awaken vocations. Every interaction with the public is a reminder of why we do this: because science is not just knowledge, it is also passion, emotion and human connection.
Pint Kids, science comes closer to the little ones
This year Pint of Science is committed to promoting scientific vocations. According to a study carried out by FECYT and the LaCaixa Foundation, popularising science increases interest in science and technology. This research also highlights that, after attending this type of activity, students with lower academic performance are the group with the greatest increase in the number of those interested in studying science, mathematics, engineering and technology (STEM).
Therefore, in this edition, two activities for girls and boys will be offered in Granada, on 20 and 21 May at 17:30 in the Nueva Estación cafeteria. On 20 May, the activity “Discovering AI for girls and young women” will take place, led by the association Women in AI, for girls aged 8 to 15. On 21 May, the López-Neyra Institute of Parasitology and Biomedicine (IPBNL-CSIC) will be running the activity “Science to go”, designed for children aged between 7 and 12. Ten years of Pint of Science
Over nine editions, Pint of Science has organised a total of 1,800 events in 750 bars in Spain, involving more than 4,300 researchers and 110,000 attendees. The tenth edition will be the largest in terms of the number of events organised and locations involved.
This festival was born in May 2013 in the UK, when researchers Michael Mostkin and Praveen Paul organised an event in their laboratories to showcase their research to people affected by various mental illnesses. They saw for themselves the great impact it had on these patients, and thought “if people go to labs… why not bring science to where people are, to the pubs?
Little did they know that a few years later, their idea would travel around the world, taking place simultaneously on all five continents in 2025, with 27 countries participating. Australian scientists will be the first to raise the bar shutters and toast to knowledge and its dissemination. From there, and with the other host countries, a three-day marathon of science and bars from around the world will begin.
The non-profit association Pint of Science España is the driving force behind the initiative in our country, which has the support and effort of more than 600 volunteers, 22 of them in Granada, as well as a large number of sponsors and collaborators who make each edition possible.
On 19, 20 and 21 May, the bars will be toasting to science and its popularisation!
