By 2030, it is necessary to achieve the following targets:

Reduce waste generation: prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse

R12.1 - IoT technologies in production factories, supply networks and common places of consumption for greater sensorization of production processes and consumption habits

These technologies allow sensorization at an unprecedented level of detail in each stage of the goods production process. This sensorization could be used to accurately model all processes and discover the systems with room for improvement to save energy and raw materials, as well as producing less pollutants and waste . The IoT can also be a fundamental tool for promoting sustainable consumption.

R12.2 - Big data and artificial intelligence on data series of production processes and consumption patterns

Companies can study all the information stored on their production processes to analyze the factors that have been able to influence the different production characteristics, in order to analyze the patterns and sets of variables that improved the sustainability of their production. On the other hand, these techniques can be used to study the consumption patterns of the population and check whether the changes that are introduced in new products and in advertising have a real impact on the consumer society and whether their consumption habits are improved.

R12.3 - Digital twins that allow the study of sustainability and "virtual" experimentation on production processes

The creation of virtual models that realistically simulate production processes can facilitate carrying out different tests in order to improve the sustainability of production processes . In many cases, parameter adjustments in these processes are complex, slow and require trial and error tests, which consume time, resources and can be a source of contaminants or waste products.

R12.4 - Augmented reality to inform consumers of sustainability aspects related to the products they consume

R12.5 - Decision support systems, recommender systems and blockchain to improve sustainability in production processes and greater transparency in communication between producers and consumers

Decision-making in goods manufacturing environments is a complex task due to the number of factors that must be taken into account (economic, temporal, resources). If other factors are also added with the intention of improving aspects related to sustainability (saving resources, less pollution, less generation of waste and pollutants, less food waste ...) the decision-making process will be substantially complicated. Therefore, the use of decision support systems and / or recommendation systems can relieve the workload of decision makers . On the other hand, for consumers to have guarantees about the good practices of companies towards sustainability, mechanisms are needed to ensure that the information provided to them by producers is correct and reliable . Blockchain can be of great help in such a task.
