Experts in Artificial Intelligence and craniofacial identification meet in Granada for the 20th international meeting

4 October, 2024

More than 125 experts from all over the world have attended several workshops and demonstrations in the facilities of the Faculty of Medicine and the UGR AI building of the University of Granada.

Granada is the venue for the 20th edition of the International Association for Craniofacial Identification (IACI) meeting, the first time in 40 years that Spain hosts this prestigious event.

More than 125 participants from 5 continents (approximately one third online) have gathered at the facilities of the University of Granada (Faculty of Medicine and UGR AI building) to share knowledge and experiences in the field of craniofacial identification, with special attention to the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques.

‘The use of AI in this and other fields represents both opportunities and threats, but we have an IACI community of diverse and distinguished professionals who face the challenges of AI and address them in various workshops, invited talks, oral and poster presentations’ said Óscar ibáñez, researcher at the University of A Coruña, co-founder and CTO of the company Panacea and co-organiser of this meeting.

Over the 5 days of the meeting, participants will enjoy 4 plenary conferences, 25 oral presentations, 28 scientific posters, 10 online presentations, a round table and several professional workshops.

Sergio Damas, professor at the University of Granada, researcher at the DaSCI institute and co-organiser of the meeting says that ‘it is a meeting of great importance at a technical and scientific level, where you can learn about the technology in use and its possibilities. We have also been able to show the module ‘Your skull rings a bell’ which, in the form of a game, invites attendees to take a photo of themselves and find out which skull from our database best matches’.

The meeting was organised by the company Panacea Cooperative Research, the University of Granada and the International Association for Craniofacial Identification (IACI).

The IACI is an international group of professionals who share a common interest in craniofacial identification, broadly defined as any attempt to use human skulls and/or faces for human identification. The association was created in 1992 after four precursor meetings.

The Andalusian Inter-University Institute in Data Science and Computational Intelligence, known as DaSCI, is a collaborative entity between the universities of Granada, Jaén and Córdoba. It is dedicated to advanced research and training in the field of Artificial Intelligence, with a particular focus on Data Science and Computational Intelligence. The institute brings together an outstanding group of researchers working on joint projects, promoting the development and application of innovative technologies in various sectors. With the aim of becoming a benchmark in its field, the DaSCI promotes the transfer of scientific knowledge to the socio-economic environment, thus contributing to technological progress and the digitisation of industry.
