#IMAIapp
The Technical University of Madrid (UPM), the University of Granada (UGR) and the Spanish Association of Trade and Industry of Wood (AEIM) have been beneficiaries of the GOIMAI project in the Call for Innovation Projects 2020 of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
The research objective of the project is to combine the macroscopic anatomy of wood and artificial intelligence techniques known as Deep Learning (DL), for the recognition of more than 400 commercial species, and provide customs agents with a tool to help accredit its legality at source, providing the scientific name of the species that is photographed from the app (available for both iOS and Android). Timber identification is an essential task for the control of international trade in protected timber species, included in the appendices of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
The #IMAIapp will be essential for such control and will ensure that the species declared at import match the timber actually imported.
The following repository provides processing scripts for training the DL model. The database with images of CITES-listed species has been released for this research at https://zenodo.org/records/11092208.
